Is CPAP
treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) common?
The most common treatment is CPAP (continuous positive airway
pressure). Other less common treatments include surgery and oral
appliances, which may be effective in certain individuals. Any
treatment plan should be thoroughly discussed with your physician.
How does CPAP therapy work?
CPAP treats obstructive sleep apnea by providing a gentle flow of
air under positive pressure through a nasal mask to splint the
airway open during sleep. The result? Breathing becomes regular,
snoring stops, and restful sleep is reestablished.
What happens if obstructive sleep apnea is not treated?
You may have increased risk for high blood pressure, heart disease
and heart attack, stroke, fatigue-related motor vehicle and work
accidents, and decreased quality of life.
How long will I need to use my therapeutic device?
It is recommended that you adhere to your prescribed therapy as long
as you have obstructive sleep apnea that requires treatment. As part
of Sleepcare Diagnostic's unique follow-up program, our specialists
will stay in touch with you periodically to see if you have any
problems in following your prescribed therapy and to help you solve
them.
